Meet Rachel in Florida!

Meet Rachel in Florida!

"Going abroad opens your world to different ways of life and is an opportunity to learn about a new culture firsthand, all while gaining beneficial experience for your future career."

1. Why did you choose to go abroad?
I have worked in different parts of America before and loved my experiences here. The culture, places
and people fascinate me. I wanted to develop my experience in my career field in an American workplace, while also gaining the cultural experience of learning more about the lifestyle of living in an American city.

2. How does the US culture differ from your culture and what has impressed you most so far?
Living in Miami, I have been surprised and impressed by how many big events there are going on in the city each weekend. Back home, there would be one major event once in a while. Often the events here are free so they are a great way to get involved and learn more about the culture of this city.

3. Could you take us for a day in your life? What is your routine?
I commute to work by bus and commuter rail, grabbing breakfast from Starbucks on the way. My role involves researching destinations, hotels and attractions in America and marketing them to encourage tourists to come here, which I find very interesting! One of the perks of the job is that I have been able to experience some of these places for myself. So far, this has taken me to New Hampshire, New Orleans and on a boat tour around Miami. It all gives me a greater insight into the places I am writing about. I eat lunch outside to get some of that Florida sunshine. I'll grab dinner at a restaurant near work and then in the evening I like to go for a walk along the Miami Beach Boardwalk. The turquoise sea is always beautiful to walk past. On weekends, I will either attend one of the big events taking place that weekend, explore a local attraction, or go to the mall, cinema, a sports game or concert. I have also taken up pickleball since being here. Pickleball is very popular in America, particularly in Miami, and it is a great way to meet people.

4. How has this experience abroad helped you to grow personally?
Navigating how things are done differently here to in my country has made me realize how adaptable I am. Living in Miami, which is known as the healthiest city in the US, I have gained knowledge in health and nutrition which I will carry forward.

5. Why would you recommend others to do a program abroad?
It opens your world to different ways of life and is an opportunity to learn about a new culture firsthand while gaining experience that will be beneficial to your future career.

6. If you could express your experience in three words, what would these be?
Adventure, growth, fun.
